MORGAN STANLEY LIFTS THE CUP FOR THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR IN SAVILLS PROFESSIONS SEVENS 2008
Hong Kong, 7th December, 2008: Sixteen teams and a record crowd of around 4,000 turned out at Stanley Fort for the 25th anniversary of the Savills Professions Sevens rugby tournament today as rival teams from the corporate world challenged each other in the name of charity.
Reigning champions Morgan Stanley beat Swire 19-12 in an evenly matched final, but the winners were pushed hard. Earlier, Swire Pacific defeated Goldman Sachs 17-12 in one semi-final, and Morgan Stanley beat Credit Suisse 7-0 in the other.
Tom Breen who played for Swire Pacifc was awarded the Player of the Tournament. Try of the Tournament went to Savills by Terence Wayburne.
For the 25th year running, the main tournament took a break at lunchtime to make way for the Directors’ Challenge. Hong Kong’s corporate heavyweights including Adam Harper of Credit Suisse, Kaiwan Turel of HSBC, Shane Wallis of CLSA, Nick Dignan of PWC, and Chris Marriott of Savills Hong Kong – swapped pinstriped suits and brogues for jock straps and rugby boots and fought for their best to win this battle of the boardroom.
This year for the first time, two ladies teams took to the field to illustrate progress of women’s rugby in Hong Kong. Morgan Stanley gave an impressive win of 19-5 by beating Tanner De Witt. The two teams made this exciting match one of the highlights of the day!
Companies that took part in the tournament covered the property, finance, legal, and accounting industries and included hosts Savills, Allen & Overy, CLSA, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, GFI Securities, Goldman Sachs, Holman Fenwick Willan, HSBC, Jardine Matheson, J.P. Morgan, JSM, Macquarie Securities, Morgan Stanley, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Swire Pacific, and Tanner De Witt.
Proceeds form the Savills Professions Sevens will be donated to six local charities: the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, China Coast Community, Fu Hong Society, Enlighten Hong Kong, Riding for the Disabled, and the David S. Davies Foundation, benefiting both the young and the old in the community.
